New Orleans

Heather and I spent a long weekend in New Orleans. It's been on our list for years but neither of us had ever been. What a great time! Some highlights:
- On our first full day in the city, we went to the National World War II Museum. I'm a big history buff, so this was really a treat for me.
- An afternoon Audubon Park and the Tree of Life was what I enjoyed the most. We sat in the quiet park, enjoying the weather, and watched a young girl (maybe 5 years old?) climb way higher in that tree than she had any business climbing. Afterwards, we walked through the neighborhood and found a fantastic little bistro, Tartine, to have lunch. Beautiful day!
- Despite Avis not being able to fulfill our rental car reservation, Heather was able to secure us transportation to Whitney Plantation, which was a very sobering tour.
- The second half of our trip was freezing. On our second-to-last day it rained most of the day. The last day was in the 20s. That day we did a swamp tour followed by a walking ghost tour and were absolutely chilled to the bone. The ghost tour was silly but fun, even for non-believers like me.
On a sad note, there was a terrorist attack the week before we were set to arrive, which made national news. It turned out to have taken place on the same block as where we were staying. An improvised memorial was set up, and the street was closed. We were both moved and thankful for the added security presence in the French Quarter.
